"It's realistic that you're going to see some of the superstar players try to forge their way into these partnerships and try to win titles together," TNT analyst Steve Kerr said.
The next 'Melodrama could be a point guard — such as the New Orleans Hornets' Chris Paul or the Utah Jazz's Deron Williams, who can opt out of their contracts after next season — taking aim at the Knicks.
These partnerships run counter to the NBA's goals, one reason the league wants to implement a hard salary cap.
"We don't think that your ability to pay (luxury) taxes to have a roster should be a part of the competitive landscape," NBA Commissioner David Stern said last week.
Kerr cautioned: "It's not like this hasn't happened before. It's just that it was a lot easier to do financially 20 years ago."
